What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency involves any urgent issue that requires immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies we treat include:
  • Severe Tooth Pain: Persistent or intense toothaches can indicate an infection, deep cavity, or other serious issues requiring prompt care.
  • Broken or Chipped Teeth: Whether caused by an accident or biting down on something hard, a broken tooth can be painful and leave the tooth vulnerable to further damage.
  • Knocked-Out Teeth: A tooth that has been knocked out requires immediate treatment to maximize the chances of saving it.
  • Lost Fillings or Crowns: A lost restoration can expose sensitive areas of the tooth, causing discomfort and increasing the risk of decay or damage.
  • Infections or Abscesses: Swelling, pus, or a bad taste in your mouth may indicate an infection that needs urgent treatment to prevent complications.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Until you can see us, there are steps you can take to manage your dental emergency and protect your oral health:
  • Severe Tooth Pain: Rinse your mouth with warm water and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause irritation.
  • Broken or Chipped Teeth: Save any pieces of the tooth if possible and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it with water, and try to place it back in the socket. If this isn’t possible, keep it moist in milk or a saline solution until you can see us.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: Keep the area clean and, if necessary, use dental cement or sugar-free gum to temporarily cover the exposed tooth.
  • Infection or Swelling: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply a cold compress to reduce discomfort. Seek care immediately if you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
